Top Global University Project

On September 26, 2014, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology selected target schools for its Top Global University Project. This project supports decisive action toward globalization through college-wide innovation at universities, such as initiatives to effect international standards in the organization and structure of the university, hire more non-Japanese instructors, recruit more international students, and promote an international outlook among Japanese students. The selected universities are listed in the figure below.

In Japan today, the word “globalization” is used in many different contexts, and higher education is no exception.

In foreign universities, it is now commonplace to bring together able students from all over the world, and particularly in emerging nations in the Asia region, to select courses with an eye on the possibility of studying abroad. Now, one could say that universities across the world are in competition, not just domestically but also with top universities in other countries, for student education and recruitment.

Japan has achieved excellent research and a high level of education that has been fostered for many years, and aims to globalize its universities by gathering the best and the brightest from all over the world, and by sending our own students across the world in order to build international networks and enhance Japan’s competitive strengths.
