Outline: About Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in Proposed Research Areas)

All research activity can be traced back to research conducted according to the imagination, ideas, and innovative thinking of individual researchers. This most basic of research, the kind of research that forms the platform upon which all other research activity is based, has long been funded by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Although there have been cuts to many areas of the national budget, the government is committed to supporting researchers; the total amount of funding available to researchers through Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research is growing annually.

Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in Proposed Research Areas) were made available via open application from FY2008. These grants are designed to promote the formation and development of new areas of academic research through joint research projects undertaken from a cross-disciplinary approach. Support is provided to interdisciplinary research groups tackling issues linked directly to the problems faced by modern societies, and to advanced topics focused on the next generation.

By supporting Scientific Research on Innovation Areas, Japan hopes to encourage its scientific community to reach beyond conventional boundaries, and to adopt a collective perspective in developing creative and innovative scientific theory.
