In 2011, Japan ranked third in the world for the total number of patents registered internationally.
When considered in per capita terms (Japan ranked tenth in population), it becomes clear just how outstanding this record is.
Japan’s academia and technology enjoy a pre-eminent status internationally.
In general, patents are registered by individuals, corporations, or universities; the patents registered by universities in Japan are renowned for their advanced content.
Today, Japanese national universities have become incorporated as independent administrative institutions, and Japanese universities (including private universities) are increasingly expected to become financially independent. As such, the question of how patents are utilized after registration has become increasingly important, and we are beginning to see universities move towards financial independence.
One of the functions of Japanest NIPPON is to support the development of collaborative systems between universities and industries as a platform to facilitate the effective translation to society of the outstanding research conducted in academic and research institutions.
