Outline : About the Global 30 Project

The Global 30 Project, the goal of which is to establish a “university network for internationalization,” was established in 2009 under the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. This project supports Japanese universities that are working to improve the study abroad experience of international students. The universities that have been selected for this project (Global 30 universities) have implemented academic systems with global appeal and have created an internationally friendly learning environment.

The Global 30 universities are also academically appealing to international students. They offer programs taught entirely in English in subject areas for which Japan is particularly known, such as science, engineering and medicine. Currently, there are about 300 such degree programs offered in 13 Global 30 universities.

In addition, the Global 30 universities are urged to provide the following:
•    Academic and administrative support for international students by specially trained staff
•    Opportunities to learn Japanese language and culture
•    Workplace experiences in Japanese companies
•    Specialized staff training, including acquiring communication skills to negotiate with foreign institutions and for writing official documents in English, and practical training to prepare for international meetings
•    Offices in at least two countries outside of Japan
•    A system whereby applicants can complete the application process from their home country
•    Information sessions on studying in Japan, co-organized by Global 30 universities

The aim of the Global 30 Project is to establish a learning environment in Japan that is appealing to international students, and to provide an advanced university education by attracting international talent to Japan.
