Honda Motor Company : Motorcycle NC700X

Honda’s Passion for Motorcycle Industry
With the top market share in the motorcycle industry, Honda Motor Company, commonly known as Honda, is a world-class manufacturer of two-wheeled as well as four-wheeled vehicles.

Honda’s motorcycle production started in 1946, when it remodeled a small engine to generate power for radio equipment into an auxiliary power source for bicycles, marking the beginning of the two-wheeler era in Japan.
Since then, in production of two-wheeled vehicles, Honda has cherished its idea of “Creating devices that delight many people.” With this idea in mind, the company has sent out into the world many new products that were ahead of their times, and that contributed to the lives of many people as a means of transportation.

The Super Cub, released under the concept of “enabling anyone to ride a motorcycle as a more casual daily tool,” has become widely used all around the world. The Honda Super Cub greatly contributed to enhancing Honda’s brand recognition, and laid the foundation for Honda to become the top Japanese manufacturer in the two-wheeled–vehicle industry. More Super Cubs are manufactured than any other motorcycle model in the world, with annual sales currently at 7.3 million units.
At the dawn of Japan’s highway age in 1969, the company also launched the Dream CB750 Four, pioneering a new category of large motorcycles in the domestic market and giving rise to an unprecedented sport-bike boom across Japan. Honda continued to create representative products in many categories, offering diverse “joys of riding,” ranging from convenient means of transportation in daily life to recreational vehicles for exhilarating rides, thereby enriching the lifestyle of every customer.
Based on his experience of taking part in automobile races, founder Soichiro Honda believed that efforts to improve technology resulting from participation in motorcycle races would inevitably lead to improvements in Honda products. As seen by the involvement of subsequent managers in the company’s racing department, it is often said that racing is the very DNA of Honda. In Japan, Honda operates the two international race tracks, Suzuka Circuit and Twin Ring Motegi, which host a variety of race events including Formula One.
Honda has thus broadly dedicated itself to the development of Japan’s transport infrastructure by offering a diverse range of products to meet the needs of the times. The leading manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles has successfully achieved the production of an outstanding new global engine.
This superior engine is mounted in the NC700X model.

Distinctive features of the new NC700X engine
NC700X, one of Honda’s mid-class motorcycles, achieves high fuel efficiency, taking advantage of the combined technology of the top-ranked engine maker in the world. Honda’s distinguished ability to develop its own quality engines is one of the company’s greatest assets.
The NC700X carries the Global 700 cc Next-Generation Engine and the Second-Generation Dual-Clutch Transmission.
To take full advantage of low-friction technology, which improves fuel efficiency, the newly developed 700 cc engine sets the Bore/Stroke at 73 mm × 80mm. In addition to the optimum valve-timing set and the resin coating applied on the pistons, the efficient 700 cc Engine employs, for the first time in a motorcycle engine, a lightweight aluminum material for the friction-reducing roller rocker arms. Adoption of uneven-interval firing with a 270° phase crank and uniaxial primary balancer help reduce vibration, giving the Engine a pleasant throbbing feel. In the exhaust-emission purification system, the catalyzer, a three-way catalyst placed directly beneath the exhaust ports to maximize the efficiency of exhaust-emission purification, can start promptly after the engine starts by letting the combusted gas pass through the catalyst while the gas is still hot. Additionally, incorporation of an electronically controlled fuel-injection system (PGM-FI) allows the engine to achieve excellent environmental performance even while providing powerful, smooth output.

“As it challenges itself in motorcycle development, Honda aims to create a new innovative concept in motorcycle development by integrating different concepts in motorcycle development at the highest level by pursing new possibilities without adhering to conventional thinking” — this essential Honda concept has engendered the NC700X.

The majority of normal riding, outside of racing competitions, is conducted at 140 km/h or slower, with engine speeds at 6,000 rpm or lower. Under such conditions, the NC700X combines comfortable riding with remarkable fuel efficiency.

To achieve more a comfortable ride, the NC700X employs a telescopic suspension with a 153.5-mm cushion stroke for the front, and the Pro-Link suspension with 150-mm axle travel for the rear. This results in a ride that can responding with agility to changing road-surface conditions while allowing riders to experience the fun of maneuver enhanced by a low center of gravity.

The NC700X is also characterized by having better functionality than previous motorcycles, including a smaller fuel tank due to the improved fuel economy. In the newly available space, there is a 21-liter storage space that can fit a full-face helmet.

Supply system responding to expanding overseas demand
Currently, Honda is pushing more than ever to expand into the global market. While the main focus may be on four-wheeled vehicles, Honda is equally passionate about two-wheeled vehicles.
Honda's NC700 series, represented by NC700X and equipped with both fuel efficiency and joy of riding, is attracting a considerable amount of worldwide attention. As a new kind of bike that can be enjoyed “for a wide range of uses from daily commutes or shopping to outdoor activities such as bike touring to the suburbs," Honda's NC700 series is expected to attract new customers in the global market of two-wheeled vehicles.

The annual motorcycle production capacity of Honda in the entire Asia-Pacific region reached approximately 12.75 million units in 2011. The growing demand, influenced by the regional economic growth in the region, has triggered an expansion in the global market, and this region plays a significant role as an export base to developed countries. In Thailand, Honda has developed a cross-border supply system to provide motorcycles and their parts to neighboring countries, Europe, and North America as well as the domestic market. In India, the company has constructed a new plant and expanded the production capacity of its existing plants, in order to build a production system that efficiently covers that vast country. In Indonesia, after construction of a new plant exclusively for scooter models, estimated total annual production (including that of previously existing plants) is nearly 5.3 million units. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, construction of a new plant is planned as well. In the growing African market, the company has strategically launched low-price motorcycles: in 2011, two new small motorcycles, the Ace CB125 and Ace CB125-D, were released in Nigeria. Honda also plans to expand its sales by launching these low-price motorcycles as the situation demands in other African countries where increasing growth in demand is expected.

Aiming for creation of products responding to the needs of the current era

Today, as companies around the world are demanded to offer products that respond to the environmental standards, Japan’s automobile industry, one of the national major industries, has focused on the development of new products that meet the needs of the current era.
Honda is making unceasing efforts to develop cutting-edge technologies that respond to the times. Therefore, Honda’s products, which have acquired substantial number of users across the world as well as in Japan, will unquestionably contribute to improvements in environmental issues related to transport infrastructure around the world, even as population growth continues.
Honda has the ability to realize its new concept of fusing different qualities at the highest level, combining comfort riding with high fuel economy. Because of this unique advantage, Honda will continue to acquire new users.

Honda has also established an aircraft manufacture department, and has the capability to develop and manufacture an aircraft in its entirety, from engines to air frames (see also Honda Jet). Such an aircraft production system is a rarity among the world’s automobile manufacturers, and is a great asset of Honda.
There is no doubt that Honda will establish its position as an all-encompassing transport equipment manufacturer that contributes to various aspects of people’s lives around the world, from day-to-day tasks to business and travel to sporting activities.
