National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) & Rolls Royce Joint Research: Nickel-based Superalloys

Outline

Since the invention of KS steel in 1917 by Kotaro Honda, metallurgy in Japan has become internationally renowned as being supported by highly advanced academic research and cutting-edge technology allowing the manufacturing of materials of outstanding quality. The strength of research and development performance in Japan and the unrivaled quality of domestic manufacturing techniques are such that this technological knowledge, applicable to general and specialty types of steel, is far and away the best in the world.

Nickel-based superalloy is an ultra-high temperature material, able to withstand hyperthermal environments of 1000°C or more and highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion.
