JGC Corporation: LNG Plant and Oil and Gas Development Projects

History of JGC Corporation
JGC Corporation is a company that specializes in the construction of manufacturing facilities. For example, it is involved in the building of various plants such as petroleum refineries, as well as petrochemical plants, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.

JGC was founded in 1928. In the 1950s, JGC received an increasing number of orders to construct petroleum refining plants, driven by the growing demand for new construction and modernization of petroleum refining facilities as well as the rise of the petrochemical industry in Japan. In the late 1950s, the Japanese economy entered into a period of a high economic growth. Domestic energy demands explosively increased and a series of petrochemical complex construction projects was proposed.

JGC, which had successfully expanded its domestic business in this way, took the much-anticipated step toward expansion into overseas markets around 1965. JGC branched into South America, China, South East Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Its overseas revenues exceeded 50% of the company’s total income in 1975, driven by the construction of many plants, with both orders and sales rapidly increasing due to this global business development. Currently, JGC is enterprisingly constructing various plants in the Middle East.

JGC is also diversifying its business to nuclear energy, medical services, and food sectors in addition to petroleum-related projects. Moreover, JGC is a pioneer in the development of natural gas resources, and is now regarded as a specialist company in this field, receiving an increasing number of orders from many countries.

Here, two types of the plant business are showcased. The first is in the LNG sector for which JGC benefits from world-class, cutting-edge technologies. The second is a plant business in petroleum and gas resource development, in which JGC is engaging its accumulated knowledge base.
