Background
The population-aging rate (the percentage of the population aged 65 and over compared to the total population) reached 23.1% in October 2010 in Japan, which is highest in the world and is likely to increase further in the future. Now in Japan, cancer is the leading cause of death followed by heart diseases with cerebrovascular diseases the third deadliest. They are collectively called the three major causes of death in Japan.

Underlying factors of these three major killers include unhealthy lifestyle habits regarding diet, physical activity, rest, smoking, and drinking, which may also cause lifestyle-related diseases. Lifestyle-related diseases, which may trigger various other diseases, are regarded as a major health issue of the modern society also.

Medipolis Medical Research Institute
Medipolis Medical Research Institute was founded in 2006 to continue the fight against cancer and lifestyle-related diseases, cases of which are expected to continue to increase in Japan.

The Medipolis Medical Research Institute is dedicated to these following four areas: highly advanced medical treatment, preventive medicine, mental health care, and clinical research for drug development under the mission ‘to rescue people from suffering by supporting the development of drug discovery and medical technologies.’ In particular, the Proton Beam Cancer Therapy Center, which was established as a core facility for highly-advanced medical treatment at the institute, has received much attention both domestically and internationally.
